forWord Movement: Projekt NewSpeak Interview by David A. Romero

The Mexi-Asian Perspective: A Latino’s Guide to All Things Latin, Asian, or Both

by David A. Romero

Many vie for the title of hardest working poet (or poets) in Los Angeles. Many claim the title of hardest working poet (or poets) in Los Angeles.  Every year sees the rise and fall of new venues and new, hungry artists making the rounds to fill them with their passion and drive.

For the past two years, for anyone with both functioning eyes and ears, the answer to which poets were dominating LA with their omnipresence was obvious: forWord.

This four member Asian Pacific American poetry collective could be seen from Hollywood to the Inland Empire, from Long Beach to Downtown Los Angeles and everywhere inbetween. Never before had a collective so effortlessly maintained features with open mic performances, group pieces with solo readings; managing to do all of it while loved by everyone they came across.

forWord members Eddy Gana Jr., Stephanie Sajor, Mark Maza and Susan Diep kicked off this year by performing at the 27th Annual Asian Pacific American Awareness Conference at their UC Irvine.

I had the pleasure of meeting up with forWord after the conference and witnessing their fun group dynamic in action. We had a chance to discuss their newest release, the chapbook Feel What We’re Saying.

How and when did you four poets decide to form the poetry super group forWord?

If you have missed us before and are in Southern California, you are in luck because the first show will be in OC and then the next one will be in LA. Both events are FREE!

Reflections: feature at SpeakEasy LA June 27, 2011

So there I was procrastinating trying to do something productive and then Nicole Rush of SpeakEasy contacted me and asked if we’d like to feature at SpeakEasy that evening.  In short the answer was: YES!  In long, the answer was: HELL Y-E-S!  SpeakEasy is our Open Mic home and even though it’s all the way in Downtown Los Angeles, we always try to make it to the open mic, most nights, we don’t even perform, we just go there to listen to all the amazing artists, to support new artists, and just be a part of the loving atmosphere.

The hostess with the mostest, Lady Basco

Thanks Nicole, for giving us this opportunity.

Kasi’s first time at SpeakEasy…so professional every time she touches the mic.

Mark with a “Realization”

And to come full circle we did “Writer’s Block” since it was the first piece we ever did at SpeakEasy.

Thanks to Steph for catching my lines when I messed up…

…and when you fall down, you just gotta pick yourself back up and give it all you’ve got.

Just want to give a shout out to the dude in the foreground, sorry I didn’t catch your name, but the dude was from Utah and he decided to spend his last night in Cali at Speak Easy…I thought that was just really cool.

Beanie Manifesto - I really enjoyed this piece you performed!

Karla Moxley talking about Psychology

Clive let’s people know that he is Mr. Impossible and this time with a beat.  Also shout out to the 2 dudes he invited to SpeakEasy that he ran into on the way here, that was really cool of them to check out the venue too.

It’s an honor to be around so many artists that do what they love and at the same time collaborate and support one another.  If I could give one word to describe SpeakEasy it’s: Family and we are honored and thankful to have an opportunity to feature in this space.  Also thanks to Kasi for coming by and performing and also, Eddy’s sister, Mariel was there to show some love.

And speaking of the space, it’s a really awesome bookstore with incredible acoustics for poets that don’t want to use mics and adds.  I think SpeakEasy found a new home at The Last Bookstore in Los Angeles 453 S. Spring St. in Downtown LA.

Reflections: SpeakEasy LA Open Mic/Tara Malia’s Birthday June 20, 2011

Happy Birthday Miss Malia!  I know this post is really late, but we’re gonna get caught up right quick.  Tara celebrated her birthday with the SpeakEasy LA family and everyone brought their A-game and give our thanks for one of founders of this open mic space.

“Beer Belly” provided a space for SpeakEasy that night while the coordinators tried to find a new home, despite the last minute change, all the love and atmosphere stayed the same.

This time a few Rabbits came along: Kevin Mai, Miguel Mendoza, and Isabel Bogarin to let that mic know who’s boss!  They did a great job and gained some new fans from the LA area.

Keeping it a family affair: Tara and her father

Kevin Mai, the first poet up to the mic!

Chris Edwards holds it down for the Comedians!
